Dies schrieb die Schwäbische Landeszeitung 1948 über Max Welcker, Lehrer, Chorregent und Komponist aus Schwaben, geboren 1878 als Sohn einer bekannten Musikerfamilie in Augsburg. Im Musikleben seiner Zeit war er "der Star unter seinen berühmten Kollegen, was die Aufführungen und somit die Verkaufszahlen anbelangt", wie es der Musikverlag Anton Böhm & Sohn in seiner Festschrift von 2003 formulierte. Heute ist er nahezu vergessen. Sein Werk zählt über 600 Kompositionen aller Bereiche der geistlichen und weltlichen Chormusik. volkstümliche Lieder, Humoresken und Heimatliches in schwäbischer und bayerischer Mundart stehen gleichberechtigt neben Messen und Gesängen für die Liturgie des Kirchenjahres. Er schuf einzigartige Verarbeitungen vom bekannten Weihnachtslied "Stille Nacht" und sein "Zwetschgendatschi" wurde durch den berühmten Münchner Volkssänger Wei Ferdl populär. Entlang seiner Biographie entstand ein ungewöhnliches Buch, das auf vielfältige Weise Einblicke in Schwabens Gesellschaft, Kultur- und Musikgeschichte vom Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gewährt. Dabei steht die Geschichte seines Lebens im Kontext zu seinen musikalischen Vorfahren aus Sachsen. Max Welckers Leben wird durch zahlreiche bisher unveröffentlichte Fotografien, Dokumente und Handschriften erfahrbar und lebendig.
