Pain and loss are not only products of chaos, they produce chaos. Chaos moves one out of familiar patterns and known ways and causes one to re-evaluate what is important. James R. Newby is the Minister of Spiritual Growth at the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, Des Moines, Iowa, and the Executive Director of the D. Elton Trueblood Yokefellow Academy. A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), he has served on the faculty of the Earlham School of Religion and has been editor of Quaker Life magazine.
