The Prophet (1923) is a book of 26 prose poems by the Lebanese American artist, philosopher and writer Khalil Gibran. A collection of philosophical, spiritual and motivational poetic essays, it reflects Gibran's experience as an immigrant. The text is accompanied by twelve resplendent illustrations drawn by Gibran. Almustafa has been living on an island named Orphalese where he has spent twelve years waiting for a ship to take him to the isle of his birth. In the twelfth year, he notices this ship approaching the harbour. A seeress named Almitra hails him to speak of his truth to the gathered audience before his departure. In response, he muses over a wide range of themes, such as the essential philosophy of life and death and the emotions and thoughts that drive human beings. Written in lucid, liminal prose, the book speaks to readers of all ages. It has been translated into more than fifty languages and has sold tens of millions of copies.
