Le nom grec du livre du L�vitique �tait to Leuitik�n, qui signifie des L�vites . Les L�vites �taient la tribu sacerdotale des Isra�lites, que le L�vitique �tablit comme pr�tres h�r�ditaires, avec des villes o� r�sider. Le nom h�breu du livre est wayyiqrā, g�n�ralement translitt�r� en Vayikr�. Ce nom h�breu est bas� sur le premier mot du livre, qui signifie et il appela . Le nom fran�ais est une translitt�ration du nom latin ancien Leviticus, qui partage une origine commune avec le nom grec. Ce livre ne figurait pas dans le Samareitikon, la traduction de la Torah samaritaine r�alis�e � la Biblioth�que d'Alexandrie avant la Septante. Par cons�quent, le livre des L�vites est probablement apparu comme un ajout aux traducteurs grecs travaillant � la Biblioth�que d'Alexandrie. Les traducteurs latins anciens semblent avoir partag� cette interpr�tation et l'ont nomm� en cons�quence.

Les diff�rences textuelles entre le L�vitique grec et le Vayikr� h�breu sont bien moins importantes que celles observ�es dans les autres livres de la Torah, ce qui sugg�re que le livre a �t� �crit relativement r�cemment avant sa traduction en grec. Les lois de ce livre correspondent aux r�formes religieuses du roi Josias de Juda, qui r�gna entre 640 et 609 avant notre �re. Cela se produisit moins de 400 ans avant la traduction grecque. Ses r�formes auraient d�but� avec la d�couverte d'une copie originale des lois de Mo�se dans le Temple de J�rusalem, qui devint ensuite le fondement de sa Torah officielle. Les lois du L�vitique font �cho � ses r�formes telles que d�crites dans les livres des 4e Royaumes et des Rois massor�tiques, ce qui explique pourquoi le livre est g�n�ralement consid�r� comme datant de son �poque. Ce constat est corrobor� par le fait que ni les Samaritains ni les �gyptiens-Isra�lites n'ont accept� le livre � l'�poque pr�-hell�nique. Les Samaritains continu�rent � utiliser leur Torah en quatre livres jusqu'� ce que la dynastie hasmon�enne d�truise tous les exemplaires � la fin du 2e si�cle avant notre �re.
