Le manuscrit de Florence, Laurentianus San Marco 584, copié dans le dernier tiers du IXe siècle par un clerc de la France du nord-est ayant peut-être émigré en Italie du Nord, contient 27 textes d'Athanase, Grégoire de Nazianze, Basile de Césarée, Grégoire de Nysse, Jean Chrysostome, Cyrille d'Alexandrie et Proclus, authentiques ou non, tous connus en grec et de genres littéraires variés. La collection n'existe pas comme telle en grec. Au terme de la première étude détaillée du manuscrit (et de 13 copies partielles des XV-XVIe siècles), de la succession des pièces, de nombreuses leçons, de la langue et des citations bibliques, l'auteur montre que le traducteur s'est servi d'un ou plusieurs recueils grecs constitués dès l'époque de Zénon (après 482) et il estime vraisemblable que cette version très littérale est due à un membre de l'entourage du pape Vigile à Constantinople, originaire de Lombardie, où il termina sans doute son travail (peu après 550), lequel tomba dans l'oubli, à l'exception du dernier texte. L'ouvrage, présenté comme thèse en Sorbonne (1989), retrace l'oeuvre de l'humaniste J. Gillot et s'achève par l'édition critique des cinq lettres de s. Basile.

L'auteur: Agrégé de lettres classiques, Benoît Gain est maître de conférences de latin à l'Université de Metz. Il a publié un ouvrage sur L'Eglise de Cappadoce d'après la correspondance de s. Basile (Rome 1985) et poursuit ses recherches sur les traductions latines des Pêres pour le Catalogus translationum (Washington).
