Man reohnete zunaohst die Boden als "Erden" zu den Mine- ralien und behandelte sie als Teile der Mineralogie. Die erste selbstandige Bearbeitung bodenkundlioher Fragen findet sioh bei W aBeri us, der ala Professor in U p-sala lebte, Chemie, Medizin und Mineralogie lehrte und mit seinen Agrioulturae chemioa fundamenta am Anfang der wissensohaftliohen Behand- lung der Bodenkunde steht. N ooh lange bearbeiteten Mineralogen di Boden (so Hum e, Davy, von dem die Bezeiohnung "Agrikultur- chemie" stammt). Es mag auch darauf hingewiesen werden, daB sioh Beziehungen erkennen lassen, die von den alteren Mineralogen iiber Breithaupt, Naumann zu Fallou fiihren. Mit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts spalten sioh die Methoden, naoh denen bodenkundliohe Fragen bearbeitet werden, in versohiedene Riohtungen, die nooh heute; oft auffallend unvermittelt, neben- einander vorhanden sind. In den meisten Fallen wird die Boden- kunde ala Hilfswissensohaft fUr andere Zwecke, fUr Landwirtsohaft, Forstwirtsohaft, hygienisohe und bauteohnisohe Fragen usw. be- traohtet.
