Die Literatursprache der Russen, die ihre auBerst reich- haltige geistige Kultur wiederspiegelt, ist in schriftlichen Denkmalern dokumentiert; die altesten werden ins 11. Jahr- hundert datiert und sind die in der altkirchenslavischen Schriftsprache russischer Redaktion abgefaBt. Von den Handschriften aus diesem Jahrhundert sind bis in unsere Zeit vergleichsweise wenige erhalten, namlich nicht mehr als ein Dutzend. Nur die Halfte von ihnen ist durch das Jahr der Niederschrift, welches vom Schreiber direkt in der Handschrift angegeben ist, genau datiert. Der Zeitpunkt der Abfassung der librigen Handschriften laBt sich nur annahernd nach indirekten Angaben bestimmen: nach dem schriftlichen Duktus, der klinstlerischen Ausgestaltung, nach den Eigen- heiten der Sprache. Sie sind aIle religiosen Inhalts. Unter diesen Denkmalern geblihrt ein bedeutender Platz den Me- naen - Sammlungen von Hymnen, die aus dem Griechischen libersetzt und nach den Monaten des in der Rus' liblichen byzantinischen Kalenders in Gruppen zusammengefaBt wur- den. Die Menaen zeichnen sich durch ihren hohen dichteri- schen Gehalt und stilistischen Reichtum aus. Dies bezieht sich in erster Linie auf die griechischen Originale, aber auch auf die slavischen Ubersetzungen. Diese Hymnographie kennen auch die Syrer, Kopten, Athiopier, Grusinier und Armenier. Sie ist Eigentum des by- zantinischen Kulturkreises. Einer der Begrlinder der ostli- chen Hymnographie war der "groBe Prophet der Syrer" Mar Aphrem, besser bekannt unter dem Namen Ephraem der Sy- rer (gest. 373). 1 Nach dem Zeugnis des Historikers XXXVI N. A. Mescerskij Sozomenos (5. Jhdt. ) schrieb dieser Lieddichter 300. 000 Verszeilen.
