Die N atul' bricht niemals ihre Gesetze. Leonardo da Vinci Das vorliegende Buch war urspriinglich als zweite Auflage meiner Broschiire "Das natiirliche MaBsystem" gedacht. Seit Erscheinen dieser Broschiire hatte ich aber Gelegenheit, mit einer groBen Reihe von Fachleuten alier Gebiete der Technik und Physik iiber das MaBsystem- problemausfiihrlichst zu diskutieren, beziehungsweise in nationalen und internationalen Fach- und Normungsverbanden mitzuarbeiten, so daB ich einen weiten Einblick in die verschiedenen Ansichten und die Pro- bleme gewinnen konnte, die heute immer noch die MaBsystemfrage be- herrschen. Der dominierende Eindruck ist nach wie vor die Erfahrung, daB einerseits aneinander vorbeigeredet wird, da die wesentlichen Grund- begriffe verschieden definiert, verschieden gedeutet und verschieden gewertet werden, und daB vor aliem eine Reihe von ausgesprochenen Fehlern deshalb gemacht wird, well nur wenige imstande sind, wirk- lich bis auf die maBgeblichen Grundlagen vorzudringen und sie objektiv zu beurteilen. Diese Grundlagen erscheinen meist trivial und machen es vielen unmoglich, durch generationenlange Gepflogenheit und Ge- wahnung in Fleisch und BIut iibergegangene Formen von Grund aus zu revidieren. Aus diesem Grunde erschien es mir angezeigt zu sein, die fliichtige Skizze durch eine ausfiihrliche Arbeit zu ersetzen, in der ich mich bemiihte, die Grundlagen kritisch herauszuarbeiten und den haufigsten Einwanden, denen man immer wieder begegnet, den Boden zu entziehen. Vor aHem mage man sich doch hiiten, in die Physik ZweckmaBig- keitsgrunde einzuschmuggeln. Bedeutet doch die Physik unmittelbare Naturbeschreibung, und die Natur kennt keine ZweckmaBigkeiten, sondern nur Gesetze.
