Lo scopo di questo studio era caratterizzare la diversit� genetica e stabilire le relazioni filogenetiche tra le sottopopolazioni di cavie della zona agroecologica a pluviometria bimodale del Camerun. A tal fine, � stato estratto il DNA genomico da 110 campioni di sangue di porcellini d'India selezionati in base alla variabilit� fenotipica, alla disponibilit� degli allevatori e all'accessibilit� agli allevamenti. Lo studio � stato condotto utilizzando 16 marcatori microsatelliti SSR. I risultati principali mostrano un totale di 11 alleli all'interno della popolazione. Circa il 3% della diversit� genetica � attribuibile alla variazione tra le popolazioni e il resto � dovuto alle differenze tra individui all'interno della stessa popolazione. Il tasso di omozigoti � elevato in questa popolazione e il coefficiente di consanguineit� � positivo. Il contenuto medio di informazioni polimorfiche e il flusso genetico molto elevato potrebbero far presagire una perdita di diversit� genetica che porterebbe a una riduzione delle future opportunit� di miglioramento genetico del porcellino d'India. La struttura della popolazione e l'albero filogenetico hanno permesso di evidenziare l'esistenza di tre popolazioni genetiche distinte.
