Die ESR-Spektroskopie hat sich in den letzten Jahren cinen festen Platz unter den physikalischen Untersuchungsmethoden der Chemie erobert. Da nur paramagnetische Substanzen fiir ESR-Messungen geeignet sind, schien die Anwendungsbreite des Verfahrens zunachst klein zu sein. Die Empfindlichkeit der Spektrometer gestattet es jedoch, auch Radikale in sehr geringen Konzentrationen zu beobachten. Somit konnen neben stabi- len Radikalen auch vielfach kurzlebige paramagnetische Zwischenprodukte untersucht werden. Infolgedessen ist das experimentelle Material derart angewachsen, daB wir es vorgezogen haben, dieses Werk ausschlief31ich den Grundlagen und Ergebnissen der ESR-Spektroskopie auf dem Gebiet der organischen Chemie zu widmen. Somit wendet sich dieses Buch in erster Linie an aHe organischen Chemiker, deren Intcressen iiber praparative Probleme hinausgehen. Es soH ihnen erstens die vielfaltigen Anwendungsmoglichkeiten der ESR- Methode, wie Bestimmung der Spindichteverteilung, AufkIarung radika- lischer Reaktionsmechanismen, Konformationsermittlung, Nachweis inner- molekularer Beweglichkeit, Untersuchung der Elektronenkonfiguration stabiler Zwischenstufen etc. aufzeigen. Zweitens soH der organische Chemiker auch in die Lage versetzt werden, die ESR-Methode selbst anzuwenden. Bei der Beschreibung der theoretischen Grundlagen wurde deshalb besonderer Wert auf Anschaulichkeit gelegt. Dementsprechend sind auch die Kapitel iiber Dynamische Effekte, Kern-Elektronen-Wechselwirkungen, Einkri- staHe und Zweispinsysteme so abgefaBt, daB sie ohne tiefere Kenntnisse der Quantenmechanik verstandlich sind. Dariiber hinaus wurden theoretische Betrachtungen durch entsprechende experimentelle Ergebnisse verdeutlicht.
