Die "Farbe" verschönt nicht nur, sondern sie dient auch der Sachwerterhaltung, wenn sie fachmännisch eingesetzt und verarbeitet wird. Die zum Anstrich verwendeten Stoffe und Zubereitungen sind Materialien besonderer Art. Sie können nicht ohne weiteres zum Streichen und Lackieren gebraucht und nicht ohne Beratung und Unterweisung an die Kundschaft abgegeben werden, wenn sie ihre Auf- gaben, die zu streichenden Flächen zu verschönern und sie vor Witterungs- einflüssen, tierischem und pilzlichem Befall zu schützen, erfüllen sollen. Der Verkäufer mu sichere Kenntnis der Eigenschaften der zahlreichen Farb- körper (Lichtbeständigkeit, Deckfähigkeit, Trockenfähigkeit, Verträglichkeit untereinander und mit den verschiedenen Bindemitteln), der Bindemittel und Hilfsstoffe haben. Er mu u. a. wissen, wie Grundiermittel, Vorstreich- und Deckfarben zusammenzusetzen und für die verschiedenen Untergründe ein- zusetzen sind, wie Holz und Metalle grundiert, gespachtelt, gestrichen und lackiert, wie Eisen entrostet, Untergründe gefestigt, neutralisiert und isoliert werden. Die vorliegende Farbwarenkunde hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, in elementarer und anschaulicher Weise theoretische und praktische Unterweisungen auf den verschiedenen Gebieten der "Farben" zu geben. Sie bringt zunächst eine allgemeine übersicht über die zur Verwendung kommenden Farbkörper wie Erdfarben, Mineralfarben, Farblacke und Pigmentfarben.
