Two new chapters on “advanced modulation formats for fibre optic communication systems” and “surface plasmon polaritons and photonic crystals” have been included which discuss topics such as fibre optic coupler, coherent optical communication, BER performance of coherent optical communication systems, differential phase modulation schemes with direct detection, surface plasmon polariton and photonic crystal. Besides, a number of chapters have been significantly revised.

M. SATHISH KUMAR, Ph.D., is Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Karnataka. Earlier, he has served as a faculty member in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Dr. T.M.A. Pai Polytechnic, Manipal. He has also worked with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Seoul National University for a period of three years as a Research Assistant Professor, first under the ISEF program of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies and later under the BK21 program.

His areas of interest include Optical and Wireless Communication Systems and Nanophotonics. He has authored/ co-authored nearly 50 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He has also authored a textbook on Fundamentals of Optical Fibre Communication, 2nd ed., published by PHI Learning, and two book chapters. Besides, Dr. Kumar is an associate member of the Institution of Engineers (India) and he has acted as a reviewer for several technical journals.
