Hiermit erfülle ich das Versprechen, das ich in memer Festrede am 24. Mai 1950 "Das altar ab ische Königreich Lihjan", Kölner Universitäts- reden 8, Krefeld o. J, S. 29, gegeben habe. Ich bin viel weiter gekommen, als ich damals ahnen konnte. Die übersetzungen und damit das Gesamt- bild unterscheiden sich wesentlich von dem, was bisher galt. Ich transkribiere arabisch, teils weil die bisherige hebräische Transkrip- tion zu falschen Assoziationen führen kann, teils um das Interesse der Araber selbst zu erwecken. Inzwischen sind auch die Herren Lankester Harding und Littmann zu dieser Methode übergegangen. Wenn ich bei den übersetzungen häufig von den Schulregeln der Epi- graphik abweiche, so ist das nicht nur aus drucktechnischen Gründen ge- smehen; bei der Kürze der Inschriften ist die Zeilenangabe für den Laien überflüssig, während sich der Gelehrte ohnehin zurechtfindet. In der Interpretation der Namen bin im sehr zurückhaltend gewesen, wobei ich mich auf J. J. Hess, Beduinennamen, berufen kann.
