Physiologie des isolierten Muskels behandelt. Ein besonderer Abschnitt ist dem mechanischen Verhalten des Muskels in situ gewidmet. Hier bescbrankt sich die Darsteliung auf die Bedingungen, unter denen der Muskel bei variabler motorischer Innervation arbeitet; sie beriicksichtigt dagegen nicht Ursprung und Ursache der efi'ektorischen Impulse, die nur im Zusammenhang mit der Physiologie des Zentral- nervensystems zu verstehen sind. Aus diesem Grund wird auch die Funktion der Muskelspindeln in dem vorliegenden Band nicht erortert. 1m Rahmen des gesamten Lehrbuches von Trendelenburg-Schutz konnte es nicht die Aufgabe des Bandes sein, eine allgemeine Physiologie der Motilitat der Lebewesen und Zelien abzuhandeln, uber die die Monographie von H. H. WEBER (1958) unterrichtet. Das vorliegende Buch enthalt auch kein eigenes Kapitel uber den glatten Muskel, da mir die Unterschiede zwischen quergestreifter und glatter Muskulatur nicht so grundsatzlich erscheinen, daB sie einer gesonderten Beschrei- bung bedurften. Der spezieli am glatten Muskel interessierte Leser findet aber im Sachregister eine Zusammenstellung alier einschlagigen Angaben. Ebenso enthalt das Register entsprechende Hinweise fur den menschlichen Skeletmuskel, sowie fur den Herz-, Zwerchfeli-, Magen-, Dunn-und Dickdarm-, Harnblasen-, Ureter-, Krabben-, Muschel-, Schnecken-und Insektenmuskel. Das Literaturverzeichnis ist mit seinen etwa 1000 Angaben nur eine kleine Aus- wahl aus der Weltliteratur. Um dem deutschen Leser den Zugang zur Spezial- literatur zu erleichtern, habe ich den groBten Teil der deutschsprachigen Publi- kationen der letzten 20 Jahre aufgenommen.
