Der Plan zu diesem Buch reicht bis in das Jahr 1951 zuriick, als Dr. HORST MULLER, damals Oberarzt der Univ. -Augenklinik Heidelberg, aus seinem Studien- Aufenthalt in Amerika das Buch "Motility and Refraction" von LANCASTER mit- brachte und, von seinem didaktischen Wert begeistert, eine tJbersetzung desselben ins Deutsche vorschlug. Seit dieser Zeit gewann ich die tJberzeugung, daB es mog- lich sein miisse, auf einer breiteren Basis als der Optik des GauBschen Raumes zu einem tieferen Verstandnis der Optik des menschlichen Auges zu gelangen, und daB insbesondere eine umfassende Kenntnis der physikalischen Optik auch dazu bei- tragen miisse, die Kluft zwischen physikalischer und physiologischer Optik zu iiberbriicken. Ich bemiihte mich daher zunachst, in die von dem schwedischen Ophthalmologen ALVAR GULLSTRAND entwickelten allgemeinen Abbildungs- gesetze einzudringen. In diesem Bemiihen hat mir seit 1954 Prof. Dr. FRIEDRICH WILHELM NEUHAUS yom Mathematischen Institut der Universitat Koln wertvolle Hilfe geleistet. Ihm verdanke ich Einblicke in das Gebiet der Differentialgeometrie und andere Gebiete der hoheren Mathematik, die ich in eine dem Augenarzt ver- standliche Form zu bringen suchte. Auch in der Wellentheorie des Lichtes schien mir eine breitere Basis, als sie dem angehenden Augenarzt gewahnlich geboten wird, erstrebenswert. Bei der Abfassung dieses Kapitels habe ich von Prof. CLEMENS SCHAEFER in Kaln wichtige Anregungen bekommen.
