Die Absicht, dieses Buch zu schreiben, faBte ich zu einer Zeit, als noch keine Mono- graphie iiber die Ferrite in der Literatur vorhanden war. Bald darauf erschien jedoch das heute bereits sehr verbreitete Buch von Smit und Wijn, und in kurzem Abstand folgten weitere Werke. Damals iiberlegte ich, ob es sinnvoll sei, in der Bearbeitung des Stoffes fortzufahren, den insbesondere das Buch von Smit und Wijn mit so groBem Erfolg bewaltigt hatte, und ob eventuell eine tschechische Vbersetzung dieses Buches nicht in geniigendem MaBe die Liicke ausfii1len wiirde, die bisher in dieser Bezie- hung in der tschechischen Literatur bestand. Diese Zweifel verzogerten die Aus- fiihrung meiner urspriinglichen Absicht. Mit der Zeit aber wurden neue Tatsachen entdeckt, und die ganze Problematik wurde unter neuen Gesichtspunkten betrachtet. Die wesentliche Erweiterung der Anzahl der untersuchten Oxidsysteme fiihrte zur Anhaufung einer groBen Menge neuer magnetischer, elektrischer und kristallo- graphischer Daten, deren systematische Bearbeitung ein tieferes Eindringen in das We sen der Erscheinungen und Eigenschaften gestattete, durch die diese Stoffe yom physikalischen und oft auch yom technischen Standpunkt interessant sind. GroBe Fortschritte waren in der Deutung ihrer makroskopischen Eigenschaften mit Hilfe mikrophysikalischer Mechanismen und Modelle, im Verstandnis der Ursachen ihrer Verschiedenheit von anderen Stoffgruppen und in den Versuchen, sie in die Gesamtsystematik der festen Stoffe einzureihen, zu verzeichnen.
