Il monumento chiamato Tempio di Serapide, o Serapeo, rappresenta un contributo eccezionale per comprendere il particolare contesto geodinamico dei Campi Flegrei. Questo edificio, infatti, unisce alle testimonianze archeologica e storica, evidenze geologiche di un fenomeno, il bradisismo, che si sviluppa nell'arco di diversi millenni.
Il bradisismo, cio� il periodico lento sollevamento o abbassamento del suolo, ha lasciato tracce sia nell'ambiente costruito che nelle fonti scritte, come epigrafi e antichi manoscritti. Le osservazioni moderne della deformazione del suolo nell'area di Pozzuoli iniziano proprio con la scoperta dei resti monumentali di quello che ora � correttamente identificato come il macellum, ossia il mercato della citt� romana, avvenuta alla fine del XVIII secolo, quasi in coincidenza con la scoperta di Pompei.
L'originalit� delle tre colonne pi� alte del Serapeo consiste nell'avere una fascia scura che interrompe la regolarit� del marmo, causata dai fori praticati da molluschi (litofagi, il comune dattero di mare, lithophaga lithophaga) che si agganciano agli scogli calcarei e li corrodono fino a farne la loro dimora definitiva. Questi molluschi hanno una crescita lenta e si sviluppano in genere tra 5-6 m di profondit� e oltre e testimoniano una passata sommersione sotto il livello del mare e una successiva riemersione del Serapeo
