El Universo material contiene estructuras de gran belleza y complejidad; aquí mismo, en la Tierra, hay paisajes impresionantes, adornados con una rica variedad de formas de vida vegetal y animal; es como un magnífico palacio de mármol; pero al examinarlo de cerca resulta ser un palacio de escarcha; sin embargo "el palacio de escarcha", contrariamente a lo que parece sugerir la metáfora, es más sólido que "el palacio de mármol", porque la materia está en continuo cambio y es perecedera, pero las ideas que subyacen a ella y al parecer le dan origen, esas ideas y relaciones que codificamos en fórmulas matemáticas, permanecen y mantienen su validez siempre; las ideas son eternas.En este libro se intenta explicar con claridad cómo se han hecho los descubrimientos que nos han llevado al entendimiento actual de nuestro mundo, con intención de que sean comprendidos en su asombrosa profundidad.
