Die Entwicklung der Städte und die damit verbundenen Verstädterungstendenzen verdienen ein hohes Ma an Aufmerksamkeit in einem kleinen Land wie den Niederlanden. Hier gibt es weite landwirtschaftlich genutzte Flächen auf der einen Seite, aber auf der anderen Seite erstrecken sich über das ganze Land unzählige Bauma nahmen, die eine Zersiedelung der Landschaft vorantreiben. Die zunehmende Verstädterung nimmt in den Berichten zur Raumordnung daher einen besonderen Stellenwert ein. Die sorgfältige Verteilung von städtischen und ländlichen Gebieten auf der Gesamtoberfläche der Niederlande ist aufgrund der hohen Bevölkerungsdichte von gro er Bedeutung. Dieses Buch widmet sich den geographisch-raumordnungspolitischen Veränderungen, die durch gesellschaftlichen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Wandel erforderlich waren und sind. Insbesondere die Entwicklung der Städte spielt eine gro e Rolle. Wir beginnen im Mittelalter und im "Goldenen Jahrhundert", betrachten die städtische Entwicklung während der Industrialisierung, zwischen der Jahrhundertwende, vor und nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg bis hin zum aktuellen Stand der Stadtentwicklungspolitik. Beachtung findet zuletzt die Stadt Almere. Sie entstand nicht über Jahrhunderte hinweg, sondern wurde innerhalb weniger Jahre gebaut und ist kennzeichnend für einen neuen Typ von Stadt in den Niederlanden.
