This is the autobiography of England's first blind author to physically write a book without aid. Many years ago Vendon taught himself to touch type and has been surprising the world with his gift of insight ever since. He finds ways of enjoying life to its fullest, despite his crippling disability. During his struggles with his failing eyesight, he encounters more unexpected news from his doctor. He is now going both deaf and blind. He battles through immense emotional turmoil, falling into depression and lifting himself out of it again with God's help. It is a journey of desperation, disbelief, acceptance, survival and triumph told in his rather unconventional style of snappy dialogue mixed with racing inner thoughts that display the true crisis he is going through. He jumps across timelines and emotions, expressing the chaos that is forced upon his life through his circumstances. Vendon is able to give insight into a world where disability is an uncomfortable topic, where the NHS has two faces, one emotionally disconnected, the other surprisingly engaged. All of this is set amongst the rising tension between different race groups in England. He indeed makes a reference to the New Cross Fire of 1981 which led to the Brixton Uprising. It is a gripping true story full of dark humour, aimed at people seeking guidance for the challenges we must all face in life as well as highlighting disability awareness. A must read.
