The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice every year for recruitment to officer cadre of the Army, Navy and the Air Force. There are three papers of objective type questions only: Paper 1 is on General Knowledge, Paper II is on General English and Paper III is on Elementary Mathematics, each carrying 100 marks. Candidates qualifying the written test are interviewed by the Service Selection Board (SSB), and if finally selected, and depending on their choice and the merit list ranking, they are given admission in one of the following institutes for orientation training: a) Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun; (b) Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala; (c) Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad; and (d) Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. The book contains question papers (objective-type questions) from the year 2002 to 2016 along with answer keys and solutions. It covers all the three papers (Paper I, II and III). As far as possible short-cut methods have been used to solve the mathematical problems in shortest time because this examination is the test of speed as well as of accuracy. The book will be useful for those preparing for CDS examination. It will make the candidates aware about the pattern of questions asked in the written examination besides enhancing their knowledge in all three subjects.
