The book attempts to analyse the shifts in perspectives in the narrative framework of contemporary popular Malayalam cinema as a result of the impact of globalization and influence of IT culture in the lives of people who are living in city-spaces in Kerala or compelled to live in spaces elsewhere having its own politics, economics, and geography, in turn influencing those who are inhabiting that space. The thrust area of this book is an analysis of the narrative space in Malayalam popular cinema and its renderings of new spatial relations, which accommodates the changing nature of the socio-cultural patterns in Kerala. The book does not attempt to make a clear-cut distinction between the city and the village or establish the superiority of the city over the village, but describes the living experience in and of the city in the filmic narrative of contemporary Malayalam films. It provides further scope for multiple readings on culture, gender, class, and caste within the filmic narrative of Kerala, because space (mental/physical/social) is never empty, it always embodies meanings.
