Environment is the concern of one and all. As a matter of fact, we are living on an edge in this age of environmental problems such as pollution, global warming, climate change, receding glaciers and depleting natural resources. There is need to create awareness about environment among all sections of society. The University Grants Commission’s decision of introducing Environmental Science as a compulsory subject at undergraduate level in all the universities is a welcome and worthy step in this direction.
This book provides a comprehensive view of environment, environmental resources, environmental problems and environmental concerns in three sections for focused study. Section A consists of earth and environment, ecology and biodiversity, finite nature and problem of overexploitation of environmental resources. Section B discusses various environmental problems such as air, water, noise and solid waste pollution and related health hazards along with land-related problems like land degradation, soil erosion, etc. Contemporary important issues like greenhouse effect, global warming, climate change, Asian brown haze, etc. have been discussed in sufficient detail. Provisions of regulatory norms for pollution, vehicular emission, effluent discharges and environmental legislations are also discussed in this part. Major environmental concerns such as urban forestry, eco-tourism, environmental considerations, environmental education and international efforts like Agenda 21 have been studied in detail in section C.
The book is meant for the students, teachers and researchers of Geology, Geography, Environmental Science and Mining Engineering at University level. S.K. Tiwari is Associate Professor at U.G.C. Academic Staff College, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He is postgraduate in Applied Geology and obtained his Ph.D. on the subject with thesis on Geology of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, from BHU. He is the recipient of Sharma Memorial Gold Medal from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
Dr. Tiwari has actively participated in several national and international conferences on environment and geology. The books written by him include Ore Geology, Economic Minerals and Mineral Economics; Fuel Minerals and Other Energy Resources; and Mining and Environmental Science published by Atlantic Publishers and Distributors (P) Ltd. Besides, he has contributed a large number of articles on geology, environment, minerals and related topics in journals of repute.
Dr. Tiwari is considered an authority on mining and ore geology. He has carved out a niche for himself in academic circles by dint of hard work, deep research and writing prowess.
