The book consists of essays based on papers presented at the Fifth International Conference of the Association for the Study of Australasia in Asia (ASAA) organised in collaboration with Osmania University Centre for International Programmes (OUCIP), Hyderabad in Dec 2011. It offers wide-ranging perspectives on the complex phenomenon of globalisation which is explored from a variety of standpoints by contributors drawn from different countries. As the contributors are also positioned within different pedagogical and experiential frameworks, their studies offer a multiplicity of insights into the impact of globalisation and its varying ramifications across different academic fields, geographic regions, and social contexts.

Cynthia vanden Driesen completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Ceylon and obtained her MA and PhD at the University of Western Australia. She has taught at universities in Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Australia. She is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Her research interests are in the areas of postcolonial literatures, particularly Indian, African and Australian. She has published nine books (four co-edited). Her latest sole-authored book was Writing the Nation: Patrick White and the Indigene (2009, Rodopi), and her most recent publication (co-edited with Ian vanden Driesen) was Change, Conflict and Convergence—Austral-Asian Scenarios (2011, Orient BlackSwan). She is President (Australian) of the Association for the Study of Australasia in Asia (ASAA). T. Vijay Kumar has an MA and an MPhil in English from University of Hyderabad and he completed his PhD on Postcolonial African Fiction at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is Professor of English at Osmania University, Hyderabad and was also the Joint Director (2008-2012) of Osmania University Centre for International Programmes (OUCIP). He has been a Visiting Scholar at several American Universities and in Fall 2013, he was Exchange Professor at University of Utah. His research interests include postcolonial literatures and among his co-edited volumes is Focus India: Postcolonial Narratives of the Nation (2007, Pencraft). He is also a translator and among his major publications is the English translation of an early 20th century Telugu classic Kanyasulkam (‘Bride Price’). He is a founder-editor of Muse India: the literary ejournal, and the Co-Director of the annual Hyderabad Literary Festival.
