About The Book

Medieval Indian History highlights the prominent trends in the thought and institutions of medieval India by exploring not only the North Indian trends but also the thought currents and expressions in institutions as prevalent in medieval South India. A common line of thought runs through the book, showing the gradual synthesis of Muslim and Hindu ideas and institutions. It finds a proper balance in treatment between different parts of India—Mughal Kingship, for example, receives as much attention as kingship under Vijayanagara and its offshoots and the Mansabdari system under the Mughals gets the same importance as the Maharashtra Dharma and Maratha Confederacy. Written lucidly and critically, the book is of great value to research scholars, students and general readers alike.

About The Author

Dr. K.N. Chitnis, former Professor and Head of the Department of History at the Savitribai Phule Pune University, is a well-known history scholar who has produced several research books on history. His latest book, titled Glimpses of Maratha Socio-Economic History, was reviewed by The Indian Historical Review as a work that presents “a new conceptual framework and analytical thrust” to the subject matter. His other books include Keladi Polity, The Nawabs of Savanur, Socio-Economic History of Medieval India and Research Methodology in History. His edited books include Savanur Nawabs: Historical Documents and Shivaji-Mallammaji Samarotsava.
