There can be no rise in the value of labour without a fall of profits. Originally published in 1817, Principles of Political Economy and Taxation remains an enduring cornerstone in the study of political economy. It navigates the interplay between economic principles and taxation, explores their individual complexities and offers readers a profound understanding of the forces shaping societal wealth and resource allocation. This seminal text illuminates fundamental economic concepts, from the theory of comparative advantage to the impact of taxation on economic dynamics, with Ricardo's characteristic analytical rigour and clarity of thought. As relevant today as it was in the nineteenth century, this book, provides a comprehensive exploration of the economic forces that govern our world. “… a milestone in supply-side economics.” —The Washington Post

David Ricardo (1772–1823) was a British political economist and politician, widely regarded for his foundational contributions to classical economics. Born into a Sephardic Jewish family, he amassed wealth through finance before entering Parliament. As an MP, he advocated for free trade, parliamentary reform and the abolition of the Corn Laws. Ricardo’s significant works include The High Price of Bullion (1810), which critiqued the Bank of England’s policies and Essay on the Influence of a Low Price of Corn on the Profits of Stock (1815), where he argued for the repeal of the Corn Laws. His ideas on comparative advantage and the labour theory of value continue to shape economic thought today.
