Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was born in India and sent to live in England with foster parents and thereafter at boarding school. He returned to India after leaving school and worked as a correspondent at the Civil and Military Gazette and The Pioneer newspaper till 1889. He then returned to England, where he lived for the rest of life, writing numerous short stories, poems and books for children. He is best known for his works The Jungle Book, The Second Jungle Book and Kim. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907.
