The People’s Linguistic Survey of India is a rights based movement for carrying out a nation-wide survey of Indian languages, especially languages of fragile communities such as nomadic, coastal, island, hill and forest communities.

This book is Part 1 of Volume 17 (Maharashtra ki Bhashayen [Hindi]) of The People's Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) undertaken and executed by the Bhasha Research and Publication Center, Baroda.  

This present book contains information on language and linguistic variety of the Maharashtra State of India. The languages included in this book are:
Scheduled Languages : Marathi, and its sub-languages such as  Ahirani, Aagar, Kohali, Khandesi, Chandgadi, Jhadi, Tavadi, Povari, Malwani, Vanhandi, Wadavali, Samvedi, Sangmeshwari, and Sindhi, and Urdu; Non - Scheduled Languages : Adivasi languages - Katkari, Kokana, Korku, Kolami, Gondi, GondiTolya, Gondi Madiya, Thakari, Thakur ka, Thakur ma, Dhor boli, Nimadi, Nihali, Pardhani, Pavari, Bhilori, Mathwadi, Malharkoli, Mavachi, Mangeli, Rathya, Warali, Halabi; Nomads Languages : Kunchi korba, Kaikadi, Kolhati, Gupt aur Sanketik boliyan, Gormati, Golla, Gosavi, Ghisadi, Chitodiya, Chhaparband, Dombari, Nandiwadi, Paradhi, Parushi nathpanthi davari, Parushi maang garudi, Beldari, Vadari, Vaidu;  Other languages  Dakkinee, and  Nauling.

Dr Ganesh Devy Chief Editor, taught English at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He is a renowned literary critic and activist; founder and director of the Tribal Academy at Tejgadh, Gujarat; and director of the Sahitya Akademi’s Project on Literature in Tribal Languages and Oral Folk Traditions. He is an active participant in the functioning of Bhasha Academy. He was awarded the PadmaShri in 2014.
He is Chair, People’s Linguistic Survey of India,  Bhasha Research and Publication Center, Baroda.

Dr. Arun Jakhade, the volume editor, was a student of science but is a publisher of literature. He is the founder of Padmagandha Publications. Fouzia Saeed [Pakistani author, social activist and feminist] has described his work as “a mission".
Besides being a publisher, he is also an author of several books. He has received more than ten awards, including from the Maharashtra Government, for his writing skills.

Dr. Padmaja Ghorpade, volume coordinator and translation editor has an M.A. and Ph.D. (Hindi) from Pune University. She was Associate Professor, HOD of the Hindi department, and Acting Principal of S. M. College, Pune. She has translated more than 40 books ( Hindi to Marathi ), and is also a critic, author and poete. She has received five national awards from Central Hindi Institute, Maharashtra Rashtrabhasha Sabha and others.
