The Peoples’ Linguistic Survey of India is a rights-based movement for carrying out a nation-wide survey of Indian languages especially languages of fragile communities such as nomadic, coastal, island, hill and forest communities.

This book is Part 1of Volume 24 (Punjab Ki Bhashayen [Hindi]) of The People’s Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) undertaken and executed by the Bhasha Research and Publication Center, Baroda.

The book contains the information on language and linguistic variety of the Punjab State of India supported by political map given in the preliminary pages.

Scheduled languages and related articles – Punjab mein Urdu, Punjabi, Punjabi Natak Aur Rangmanch, Punjabi Media, Punjabi Cinema, Hindi Aur Punjabi, Hindi Sahitya Mein Punjab Ka Yogdaan  

Non-scheduled languages –  Odi, Gojri, Dhaha, Bazigari, Bauria, Bhand, Lahanda, Lubana and Sansi.

Dr. Ganesh N Devy, Chief Editors, taught English at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He is a renowned literary critic and activist; founder and director of the Tribal Academy at TejgadhGujarat; and director of the Sahitya Akademi’s Project on Literature in Tribal Languages and Oral Folk Traditions. He is an active participant in the functioning of Bhasha Academy. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014.

He is Chair, People’s Linguistic Survey of India, Bhasha Research and Publication Center, Baroda.

Dr. Omkar N Koul, former director, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore has had a distinguished career spanning over 40 years. Author of over 50 books, his main areas of academic interest are linguistics, language education, communication and comparative literature. He was associated among others, with several UNESCO programmes related to endangered languages and mother tongue education.

Dr. Roop Krishen Bhat, Former professor, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore and Directorate of Adult Education, MHRD, Government of India, is author of more than 35 books. He writes in Kashmiri, Urdu, Hindi and English. His main areas of academic interest are language, literature, culture and media. A Sahitya Akademi translation awardee and a prominent short story writer in Kashmiri, Bhat has been a Senior Research Fellow of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Dr. Harish Kumar Sethi is the Hindi translator for PLSI : The Languages of Punjab. Dr. Sethi is Assistant Professor in School of Translation Studies and Training at IGNOU, New Delhi.
