And Freud's extraordinary letter to Einstein, Why War? - rejecting what he saw as the physicist's na ve pacifism - sums up his unsparing view of history in a few profoundly pessimistic, yet grimly persuasive pages.

Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 and died in exile in London in 1939. As a writer and doctor he remains one of the informing voices of the twentieth century.
