Veerapandiya Kattabomman holds the pride of place among the freedom fighters who challenged the might of the British East India Company. In 1790, at age 30, he inherited the position of polygar of Panchalankurichi. His argument with Collector Jackson of Thirunelveli over taxes and his brave warfare, supported by enthusiastic but irregular and ill-equipped soldiers, against the powerful British army is now part of folklore. He was ultimately captured and hanged in 1799. To commemorate the bicentenary of Veerapandiya Kattabomman’s martyrdom, the Government of India released a postal stamp in his honour on 16 October 1999.
