Jiwantram Bhagwandas Kripalani or Acharya Kripalani, was one of the major figures in Congress during the Indian struggle for independence. His life spanned almost a century. As a young man, he was witness to the astonishing rise of Mahatma Gandhi and the pinnacle of the Indian freedom movement and in his later years, he would see India nearly lose her hard-earned democracy as the Emergency was imposed.

Acharya Kripalani was born in Hyderabad in Sind in 1888. He studied in Bombay and Pune and briefly taught at Muzaffarpur College in Bihar and Banaras Hindu University. It was during his stint as the principal of Gujarat Vidyapeeth that he became fully engrossed in Gandhi's programme and in work related to the Indian National Congress. Kripalani became the general secretary of the Congress in 1934, a post he held until 1945. At the time of independence, in 1947, he was the acting Congress President.My Times is a brilliant literary work that will arouse the enthusiasm of scholars of the Indian national struggle, as well as all those who want to glimpse into the world of the freedom-fighters and leaders of the pre-independence era. Kripalani sheds light on the relationship he shared with legendary figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Maulana Azad, Sardar Patel and of course, Mahatma Gandhi. Written in lucid language, My Times evokes Kripalani's famous speeches which were observed to be, by the great poetess Sarojini Naidu, “an enduring memorial of a soul that has passed from turmoil to an inner sense of realization.”
