Introduction
India is known as the land of spirituality. It has been graced by innumerable holy personalities and Saints who left an indelible mark on the spiritual consciousness of humankind. These great luminaries blessed the world by disseminating timeless teachings and illuminating the path to the highest realizations of Divinity.
Lives of these extraordinary souls reveals the sublime art of devotion and the path to spiritual perfection. As instruments of God, they held within them a treasure trove of transcendental wisdom and boundless divine love. They continue to be revered, not only for their oneness with God but also for the inspiration and guidance they left behind.
These Saints achieved the ultimate goal of human life—union with the Divine—and became beacons of light for others on the path of spiritual awakening. They were living embodiments of the eternal Truths of the scriptures. For most, the depth of their wisdom was unfathomable and their magnanimity unimaginable but even more inspiring was their God-intoxicated consciousness. In the heart of every Saint lay unconditional, all-consuming selfless love for the Supreme.
Upon reading about Meerabai, Soordas, Tukaram, Andal, and others, one learns that love is not an abstract notion but an elevated state of constant communion with the Divine. These Saints exemplified the ideal: God is love, and love is God. As a result, their very presence inspired the awakening of profuse devotion in the hearts of others.
Such enlightened beings are truly very rare. They are palpably distinct, epitomizing the virtues of compassion, humility, serenity, and mercy. Their aura exudes purity and love for all. Transcendentally situated, they are equanimous, dispassionate, and free from pride. They engender a passionate zeal to serve humanity with the attitude of sacrifice and complete surrender to God. With eyes of wisdom, they see One in all and all in One.
It suffices to say that great Saints in history were divine beings possessing realized knowledge of God and revelling in His bliss. As we study their lives, we find that while the goal remained the Absolute Truth, each Saint had a unique interpretation of Vedic texts and philosophy. They imparted teachings based on time, prevailing circumstances, and the condition of the souls during their era. Adi Shankaracharya revived the teachings of Advaita Vedanta while Ramanujacharya presented Vishishta Advaita. Vallabhacharya propagated Shuddha Advaita vada, and many Saints of the Bhakti Movement focused on personal devotion and experience of God.
Unequivocally, they all broke down barriers of caste, creed, and rituals, propelling souls towards the Supreme based on eternal principles. Each expressed their outpourings of divine sentiments through kirtans, dance, poetry, and literature. Their deeply touching compositions continue to provide spiritual guidance to souls even today.
Clearly, such Saints are our spiritual role models from whom we learn about our purpose in life, virtuous conduct, devotion, and inner transformation. Their biographies reveal that just like us, they too faced personal trials in the form of financial distress, social inequality, and censure. Many experienced less-than-ideal familial conditions and encountered unsurmountable problems. However, unlike us, they remained unperturbed in the face of adversity. They endured hardships perceiving them as an opportunity for spiritual growth. In doing so, they taught lessons in equanimity, faith in the Divine, and positive thinking.
These Saints veritably lived the principles enunciated in our scriptures and became paragons of philosophical truths. Their messages were universal—offering spiritual illumination and defining meaningful purpose for souls. They taught the perfect synthesis of devotion, wisdom, and action. And invited us to open our hearts to walk the path of Truth and seek the Divine within.
This book is a humble tribute to 11 remarkable God-centered Saints who graced the land of Bharat. While their sacrifices, sublime status, and spiritual wealth cannot be entirely captured in words, it is important to bring forth their teachings as inspiration for generations to come.
