In den ersten drei Auflagen dieses Buches (1937, 1942 u. 1949) hatte der Ver- fasser Dr.-lng. OTTO MIES (gest. 8. 2. 1949) unter dem Titel "Metallographie, Grundlagen und Anwendungen" besonders knapp gefaBt das ganze Gebiet der Metallographie behandelt. Die Entwicklung und Bedeutung dieses Sondergebietes der Materialpriifung machten es notwendig, Stoff und Darstellung zu erweitern. So entstanden in den letzten Jahren die beiden Hefte 121: "Metall unter dem Mikroskop" als EinfUhrung in die metallographische Gefiigelehre und 119: "Metallo- graphische ArbeitsV'erfahren" als Anleitung fUr die Labor-Praxis. Diesen beiden Biichern schlieBt sich nun diese V'ierte Auflage des Heftes 64 mit vollig neuem In- halt unter dem neuen Titel "Angewandte Metallographie" an. Sie solI - aus der Praxis fUr die Praxis - an Beispielen, ausgewahlt aus sehr vielen Schadensfall- Untersuchungen, zeigen, wie man metallographische Kenntnisse dazu verwenden kann, vorgekommene Schadensfalle aufzuklaren und zukiinftige zu verhiiten. Vorausgesetzt wird, daB dem Leser die Grundlagen der metallographischen Ge- fUgelehre (Heft 121) und der metallographischen Labor-Arbeit (Heft 119) bekannt sind und daB cr einige Kenntnis der iibrigen Werkstoffpriifverfahren besitzt (mecha- nisch, zerstorungsfrei usw., s. Werkstattbuch Heft 34: RIEBENSAHM-SCHMIDT, "Werkstoffpriifung, Metalle"). Eine besondere Aufgabe des vorliegenden Buches ist es, den Leser beim Suchen nach der Losung eines Problems schnell auf den richtigen Weg zu lenken. Zur end- giiltigen Klarung wird dann haufig noch das Studium umfangreichen Sonder- schrifttums notig sein, wie es auch, bezogen auf die hier behandelten Beispiele, am SchluB zusammengestellt ist.
