Die Forderung nach artgerechterTierhaltung wird zur Zeit haufiger als noch vor einigenJahren mit zunehmendem Nachdruck von interessierten und betroffenen Menschen erhoben. Die Motive hierfUrkonnen durchaus unterschiedlicher Natur sein. In der breiten Offentlichkeit entsteht ein wachsendes Unbehagen an man- chen heute ublichen Haltungsverfahren. Ethiker, Theologen, Philosophen und Juristen beschliftigen sich wie selten zuvor mit den Fragen der Mensch-Tier-Be- ziehung. Einige Ergebnisse der geisteswissenschaftlichen Arbeit haben sogar Eingang in die Gesetzgebung gefunden, die von einem "ethischen" Tierschutz ausgeht und das Tier in Zukunft juristisch auch nicht mehr als Sache behandeln will. Aber auch der Tierarzt, zu dessen erklarten Aufgaben die Verhutung von Tier- krankheiten gehort wird mit der Frage konfrontiert, unter welchen Haltungsbe- dingungen das Wohlbefmden von Nutztieren am besten, gerade noch oder gar nicht gewahrleistet ist. Den Landwirt als Tierhalter durfte vor allem die Frage danach bewegen, wie artgerechte Tierhaltung unter Praxisbedingungen verwirklicht werden kann. Ge- nau dies ist der Gegenstand der vorliegenden Schrift. Sie ist zuallererst aus dem Interesse der Autoren am Verhalten des Nutztieres Schwein entstanden. Im VerIaufe des Studiums am Fachbereich Landwirtschaft der Gesamthochschule Kassel - Universitat - verdichtete sich der Wunsch, uber Verhalten und Haltung dieser Tierart intensiver zu arbeiten. Am Ende dieser Entwicklung stand eine Diplomarbeit, die nun auszugsweise und in uberarbeiteter Form hier vorgestellt wird. Ein nicht zu unterschatzender Vorteil durfte darin liegen, daB die Arbeit gleichsam mitten aus der Landwirtschaft stammt. Das bewahrt vor dem Irrtum, mit der Schaffung tiergerechter Haltungsbedingungen sei schon alles getan.
