Es existieren gute Atlanten der Hämatologie, aber es besteht Bedarf für einen nicht zu umfangreichen Band von ausgezeichneten Mikrophotos üblicher Gro e, die eine praktische Hilfe für den täglichen Gebrauch am Mikroskopiertisch sind. Dies zu erreichen war unsere Absicht. Die Abbildungen zeigen Beispiele der meisten Zelltypen, auf die man üblicherweise sto t. und einige, die seltener sind, aber wir haben eine ein- seitige Darstellung von Seltenheiten vermieden. Wir haben auch keine Auswahl von überscharfen photogenen Ausschnitten getroffen, da unser Objektiv eher der Wirklichkeit als der Perfektion folgte. Wir beurteilen die Verschiedenheit in Färbung und Hintergrund unter der Sammlung von Aufnahmen nicht als praxis- feindlich, sondern als Hilfe beim Abschätzen der farberischen Variationen, die bei den meisten Färbemethoden im Liblichen Laboratorium eingeschlossen sind.
