Dieser Band enthält Vorträge, die im Oktober 1972 während der 107. Versammlung der Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte in München gehalten worden sind. Diese Versammlung war zugleich 1S0-Jahr-Feier der Gesellschaft, denn 1822 waren in Leipzig deutsche Naturforscher und Ärzte auf Einladung von Lorenz Oken Mal zusammengekommen, um sich "in jährlichen Versammlungen das- zum ersten jenige mitzutheilen, was man in der Zeit gedacht und gethan". Das Generalthema der Versammlung 1972 hie "Bewältigung des Fortschritts". B. Hassenstein und H. Mohr, Freiburg, für den Den wissenschaftlichen Leiter- naturwissenschaftlichen und F. Hartmann, Hannover, für den medizinischen Teil- ist es gelungen, für die sachliche Behandlung der brennenden Probleme, die sich aus dem umstürzenden Fortschritt der letzten Jahrzehnte ergeben, eine Reihe von her- vorragenden Wissenschaftlern zu gewinnen. Das Ergebnis ist zwar nicht die Bewäl- tigung des Fortschritts, aber doch eine wohlausgewogene Darstellung der Fakten und Voraussetzungen, von denen auszugehen ist. Den wissenschaftlichen Leitern und allen Vortragenden sei auch hier der Dank der Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte ausgesprochen. Ein besonderer Dank gebührt dem Springer-Verlag, dessen gro zügige Unterstützung es ermöglicht hat, diesen Band - zum Teil mit Hilfe von Sonderdrucken aus verschiedenen Zeit- schriften - zusammenzustellen und damit die Vorträge in der Geschlossenheit, in der sie geplant waren, wieder zusammenzuführen.
