About The Book

Jede Neuauflage eines medizinisch-wissenschaftlichen Werkes bedeutet die Setzung eines Meilensteins der wissenschaftlichen Entwicklung. Diese hat in den letzten beiden Dezennien einen unerhorten Aufstieg genommen. Die Vermehrung des Wissens folgt einer e-Funktion. Das hat zur Folge, daB ein einzelner Autor, der es in der 3. Auflage (1942) noch unternehmen konnte, das gesamte Gebiet der Hamatologie allein darzusteIlen, dazu heute nicht mehr imstande ist. Die 4. Auflage (1951) wurde bereits durch zwei Autoren bearbeitet, und die jetzige 5. Auflage erforderte liber 30 Mitarbeiter. Man mag das bedauern, weil darunter die Einheitlichkeit der Darstellung leidet. Zu andern ist es aber nicht. Immerhin hofft der Herausgeber, durch den einheitlichen Kreis der Autoren, die aIle dem Freiburger hamatologischen Zentrum entstammen, eine gewisse Einheitlichkeit noch bewahrt zu haben. Der Vergleich mit dem Inhalt der letzten Auflage laBt die gewaltige Entwicklung der Blutforschung in den letzten 15 Jahren erkennen. Die hamatologische Morphologie ist durch die neuen Methoden des Phasen- kontrastverfahrens, der Elektronenmikroskopie, der Cytochemie, der Mikro- spektrophotometrie sowie der Tritiummarkierung wesentlich bereichert worden. Die Biochemie hat ihren Siegeszug auch im Bereiche der Lehre von den Blut- krankheiten weiter fortgesetzt. Die Konstitution des HamoglobinmolekUls wurde aufgeklart, und die Pathologie dieses MolekUls bildet ein neues Kapitel der Hamatologie. Die Biochemie der Plasma-EiweiBkorper hat neue Aspekte flir die Pathologie vieler Blutkrankheiten gewinnen lassen. Dasselbe gilt fUr die neuen Erkenntnisse liber den Erythrocytenstoffwechsel und die Hamsynthese. Neue Anamieformen wurden als Folge von Fermentstorungen sowie als Folge von Storungen der Ham- und Porphyrin-Synthese aufgedeckt.
