Das Studium von Metail-Metail-Systemen hat seit langer Zeit die wich- tigsten theoretischen Vorsteilungen fiber Adsorption und Chemisorp- tion geliefert. Man denke z. B. an die Langmuir-Isotherme oder an die Vorstellung von der ionischen Bindung adsorbierter Molekeln. Gegen- wartig ist es die Quantenchemie der Adsorptionsbindung, die gerade an diesen Systemen wesentliche Fortschritte macht. Die praktisch-technische Bedeutung der Metail-Metail-Systeme er- streckt sich von der Gewinnung elektrischer Energie aus Kemreaktoren oder Sonnenstrahlung fiber Ionenantriebe ffir Raumfahrzeuge bis zum Spurennachweis halogenierter organischer Verbindungen. Wer auf diesem Gebiet zu arbeiten beginnt, hat groBe Schwierig- keiten, aus der verstreuten Literatur einen zusammenhangenden Dber- blick fiber die Tatsachen und deren neuere Deutung zu gewinnen. Der Sinn des Buches soil daher sein, sowohl die wesentlichen experi- mentellen Tatsachen als auch die gedanklichen Grundlagen zu vermitteln. Dabei werden auch Themen angeschnitten, deren Behandlung noch keineswegs ausgereift ist. Die Auswahl der zitierten Literatur ist ein KompromiB zwischen Vollstandigkeit und Beschrankung auf das wirklich Wesentliche. Jeder KompromiB findet seine Kritiker. Die Darstellung ist tells ausffihrlich, tells, wenn die notwendige Literatur leicht zuganglich ist, sehr kurz. Der Verfasser halt diese Unterschiede im Hinblick auf den praktischen Gebrauch des Buches fUr nfitzlich. Mehrere Rechnungen zur Quantenchemie und die Tabeile der Aus- trittsarbeiten verdanke ich Herm Dipl.-Chem.
