Das Krankenbeforderungswesen hat seit jeher - und zwar mit vollem Recht - als integrierender Teil des Rettungswesens gegoIten. Dieser Tatsache ist es zuzuschreiben, daB auch in der Literatur, von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen, beide Teilgebiete cine gemeinsame Behandlung erfuhren. Aller- dings ist das ins Organisatorisch-Technische ubergreifende Krankenbeforde- rungswesen dort nicht immer in dem MaBe gewurdigt worden, wie es seiner Bedeutung entspricht. Auch der Verfasser dieses Buches als Bearbeiter mehrerer Schriften uber das Rettungswesen hat diesen Fehler begangen. Der Gedanke, dem vernach- lassigten Teilgebiet eine eigene Abhandlung zu widmen, entstand im zweiten Weltkrieg, als Notwendigkeit und Wert eines geordneten Krankenbeforde- rungswesens deutlich vor Augen traten. Mit den Vorarbeiten, besonders dem Sammeln des weitverstreuten Materials, wurde sofort begonnen; der Ab-- schluB der Arbeit verzogerte sich durch die Unruhe der Nachkriegsjahre. Man konnte den Erscheinungstermin des Buches fur ungunstig haIten. Die Schar hervorragender Fachleute fur aIle Teilgebiete des Rettungswesens, auf die wir uns fruher stutzen konnten, ist arg zusammengeschmolzen; die Zeit- schriften, die einst einen regen Meinungs- und Erfahrungsaustausch vermit- teIten, sind groBtenteils eingegangen; die fruchtbaren internationalen Kon- gresse fur Rettungswesen, die deutscher Initiative ihre Entstehung verdank- ten, haben cine jahe Unterbrechung erfahren und werden bei all den inter- national en Spannungen wohl noch geraume Zeit ein Wunschtraum bleiben; Deutschland, das yom Ausland als die fuhrende Nation auf dem Gebiet des Rettungswesens angesehen wurde, besteht aus zwei Teilen.
