Einer del' merkwiirdigsten Bergbaue del' Erde, viel verschrieen und doch eigentlich so wenig gekunnt, jedenfalls abel' geologisch und bergmannisch von hohem Interesse, ist del' Erdwachsbergbau von Boryslaw. Eigenartige Verhaltnisse brachten es mit sich, da del' Berg- bau bis VOl' wenig Jahren in so au erordentIich primitiver Weise betrieben wurde, da nul' wenige wirkliche Sachverstandige das Vorkommen von Erdwachs in der Grube studieren konnten. Durch bergbehordliche Verordnungen vom Jahre 1897 wurde diesel' alte Raubbaubetrieb in den Jahren 1898-1900 eingesteIIt, urn modemen Verhaltnissen Platz zu machen. Seit diesel' Zeit ist al1mahlich ein Bild, das nirgends mehr auf del' Erde wiederzusehen ist, verschwunden, insbesondere, da die in jiingster Zeit im gro en wiedererstandene El'doIindustrie dazu beigetragen hat, dasselbe rasch und wesentlich zu verandern. Unter diesen Umstanden scheint es mil' von Iu"teresse, dieses aIte Boryslaw in Wort und Bild festzuhalten und daran des weiteren die neueren Erfahrungen iiber die geologischen und bergbauIichen Verhaltnisse des Vorkommens und del' Gewinnung von Ozokerit zu kniipfen. Dies sei del' Zweck dieses Buches. Ich habe zwar die vorhandene Literatur iiber Boryslaw und Erdwachs beniitzt und erscheint dieselbe auch entsprechenden Ortes angefiihrt, ich habe mich abel' auch bemiiht, so viel als mogliclI Tradition und eigene Erfahrung sprechen zu lassen. Endlich sei del' freundlichen Unterstiitzung des Herm k. k. Ober- bergrates Holo bek in Krakau gedacht, welchem ich viele wertvolle Daten verdanke und welchem ich hierfiir an diesel' Stelle meinen verbindlichsten Dank ausspreche. Wien, im Monat Juli 1902.
