In der Einfiihrung zum ersten, im Jahre 1976 erschienen Band dieser Reihe konnten wir an zwei Jubilaen ankniipfen: 200 Jahre zuvor hatte Adam Smith mit "Der Wohlstand der Nationen" eines der einfluBreichsten Werke unserer Wissenschaft ver6ffentlicht, und vier Jahrzehnte waren seit dem Erscheinen der "Allgemeinen Theorie der Beschaftigung, des Zinses und des Geldes" vergangen. Wir muBten feststellen, daB es urn das zweite der Jubilaen relativ still blieb, obgleich damals der scharfste Konjunktureinbruch der Nach- kriegszeit nur knapp iiberwunden war und die Arbeitslosigkeit sowohl in Europa als auch in den Vereinigten Staaten langst die Millionenh6he erreicht hatte. Es schien, als habe Sir John Hicks (1974) Recht behalten, als er das dritte Quartal dieses Jahrhunderts als das "Zeitalter von Keynes" bezeichnete und die Vermutung durchblicken lieB, es werde mit diesem auch zu Ende gehen. Die im theoretischen Ansatz und den wirtschaftspolitischen Folgerungen weit iiber den urspriinglichen Monetarismus hinausgehende "neue" klassi- sche Makr06konomik befand sich im Vormarsch, weckte hohe Erwartungen, wenn sie auch heute ihren H6hepunkt langst wieder iiberschritten hat. Wie Produkte und gauze 1ndustriezweige einem Lebenszyklus folgen, so kann man, wie es scheint, auch Theorien in ein solches Schema einordnen. Dabei zeigt sich ein markanter Trend zur Verkiirzung der Lebensdauer. Wie steht es dabei urn die Lehre von Keynes, ihre Anpassungsfahigkeit an neue Konstellationen, die auch ein Genie wie Keynes, der einst viele und besonders die diisteren Ereignise richtig prognostiziert hatte, nicht vorausahnen konnte? Dies wird eine der Fragen sein, die dieser Band zu beantworten hat.
