Wurden wir das Spiel dieser "endogenen" Krafte in Raum und Zeit verstehen, so kennten wir auch die groBeu Zuge des Meeresbodens erklaren, der unserer direkten Anschauung ja weitgehend entzogen ist. Warum nimmt er rund 70% der Erdoberflache ein (Tabelle 2-l)? Warum liegen 2/3 des Landes auf der Nordhalbkugel? Warum ist die mittlere Meerestiefe 3,7 km, die maximale an vielen Stelle. 1 um 10 km und nicht mehr? War dies immer so in der kurzen Spanne der Erdge- schichte, die wir mit geologischen Methoden einigermaBen beurteilen kennen, d. h. in den letzten 600 Millionen Jahren? Wir stehen beim Versuch, diese groBen Fragen zu lesen, auf sehr unsicherem Grund. Einfach deshalb, weil unsere direkten Beobachtungen beschrankt sind, weil selbst die tiefsten Bohrungen mit heute schon mehr als 9 km nur die auBerste Erdhaut ritzen. Die Erdkruste reicht je nach der geologischen Situation 7-60 km tief, umfaBt aber nur 0,4% der Erdmasse. Der Erdmantel darunter ist dagegen 2. 850 km dick, nimmt damit 68% ein. Der Erdkern schlieBlich hat einen Radius von 3. 470 km und enthalt 31,5%.
