" Auch ich kann die Wahr- heit dieser Worte, mit welchen Oberforstrat i. P. Frey seine "Methode der Tauschwerte" (Berlin 1888) einleitet, aus eigener Erfahrung bestli. tigen. Ich mochte ihnen aber noch einen weiteren Gedanken hinzufiigen. Wer eine Lehre, die er bisher aus innerster tJberzeugung heraus fiir richtig gehalten und ver- teidigt hat, auf Grund eingehender Studien nunmehr ala unrichtig und unhaltbar erkennt und beurteilt, diirfte mit Recht kaum der "Inkonsequenz" oder "Unreife" seiner Ansichten geziehen werden konnen. Im Gegenteil, der Fortschritt der gesamten Wissenschaft beruht im letzten Grunde auf dieser Tatsache. Fiir einen ehrlichen Charakter und einen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiter, der Anspruch darauf erheben will, ernst genommen zu werden, erscheint m. E. ein derartiges Verhalten allein folgerichtig und geradezu unerlii. . 6lich. Mit sophistischer, "scheinwissenschaftlicher Haarspalterei" eine innerlich ds unrichtig erkannte Lehre wider besseres Wissen und Gewissen aus falschem Stolz und iiber- triebener Eigenliebe weiter verteidigen zu wollen, balte ich fiir unmoralisch und verwerflich; der Wissenschaft und Praxis kann dadurch ein Dienst gewi. 6 nicht geleistet werden.
