Angesichts dieser veranderten Sachlage muBte ein Buch, ahnlich dem Mulderschen, aber auf modernenGrundlagen beruhend, als eineNotwendigkeit erscheinen, und in der Tat schrieb M. Weger, der sich nach Mulder die groBten Verdienste um die Firnischemie erworben hat, schon im Jahr 1898: "Es ist zu bedauern, daB sich kein zweiter Mulder findet, der mit gleichem Verstandnis ffir Theorie und Praxis das Gebiet der Firnisse und Lacke der neueren Zeit entsprechend bearbeitet. Eine gesunde wissenschaftliche Grundlage wiirde sicher den hier beteiligten Industrien zu groBem Vorteil ge- reichen. " Nun bilde ich mir nicht ein, dieser zweite Mulder zu sein, nachdem aber seit 1898 nichts geschehen ist - kein einziges der seither erschienenen Werke bringt eine systematische Durcharbeitung der vorliegenden Materie -, habe ich mich zu dem Versuche, die Aufgabe im Sinne Wegers zu losen, entschlossen. Seit vielen Jahren zwar nicht in der Firnisindustrie selbst, aber in einem verwandten Zweige der Fettindustrie praktisch tatig, . habe ich mich auch theoretisch an den Arbeiten zur Aufklarung der Zusammensetzung des Leinols und der chemischen Vorgange beirn TrockenprozeB beteiligt und mir dadurch eine ziemliche Kenntnis des Gegenstandes erworben. Aber Irrtiimer sind auf einem derartigen Gebiete nie ganz zu vermeiden und vor allen Dingen mag bei dem weithin zerstreuten Material eine oder die andere wertvolle Angabe iibersehen worden sein.
