Bedenkt man, daB in Osterreich 1952 bei del' Allgemeinen Unfallversicherungsanstalt aHein von 130265 ArbeitsunfaHen 36,75% Hand- und Fingerverletzungen waren, und daB bei den westdeutschen gewerblichen Berufsgenossenschaften im selben Jahr 1,6 Millionen Arbeitsunfalle zur Meldung kamen, bei denen del' Prozentsatz del' Hand -und Fingerverletzungen etwa gleich hoch war, dann erkennt man, welch ungeheure Bedeutung diese Verletzungen und deren Heilung fur die Arbeitskraft eines Volkes haben. Auch die rein wirtschaftliche Bedeutung diesel' Ver- letzungen nicht nur fur die Betroffenen, sondeI'll auch fUr die Gesamtheit, laBt sich an Hand diesel' Zahlen leicht ermessen. Es ist ein groBes Verdienst BOHLERS, als einer del' ersten dies erkannt und del' Behandlung del' Hand- und Fingerverletzungen besonderes Augenmerk geschenkt zu haben. Sein Schuler KROMER hat 1938 in dem Buch "Die verletzte Hand" die damaligen Erfahrungen am Unfallkrankenhaus Wien zusammengefaBt. In den Vereinigten Staaten war es VOl' aHem STERLING BUNNELL, del' in seiner uniibertroffenen Lebensarbeit der Technik und Methodik der Handchirurgie neue Gesichtspunkte verliehen und sie in seinem Buch "Surgery of the Hand" mitgeteilt hat. Unter seinem EinfluB hat dieses Gebiet del' Chirurgie in den letzten 15 Jahren einen groBen Aufschwung genommen und eine bedeutende Erweiterung erfahren. Wir hatten oft Gelegenheit, im Unfallkrankenhaus Wien diese Methoden anzuwenden.
