1m ersten Sonderheft des "Zuchter" uber Fruhdiagnose (1957) wurden genetische und physiologische Ur- sachen behandelt, die den Zusammenhangen zwischen Fruh- und Spatwerten bestimmter Eigenschaften zu- grunde liegen konnen. Begriff und praktische Bedeutung der fruhen Erkennbarkeit von Spatmerkmalen wurden umrissen. Es wurde gezeigt, daB ihr Wert bei langlebigen Gewachsen, denen das erste Sonderheft in der Hauptsache gewidmet war, vor allem im Zeitgewinn liegt. Bei kurzlebigen Kulturpflanzen dagegen treten andere Vorteile in den Vordergrund, wofUr R. VON SENGBUSCH klassische Beispiele gab. Unter Fruhdiagnose versteht man die indirekte Erfassung von spat erkennbaren Merkmalen auf Grund von Aussagen, die man an fruh auftretenden Merkmalen gewinnt. (Die direkte Bestimmung von Eigenschaften taUt nicht hierunter.) Der Begriff "Fruhdiagnose", im engeren Sinne, ist auf die Erfassung von Kriterien derselben Individuen beschrankt, die man in ihren verschiedenen Lebensstadien beobachtet. Ahn- liche Probleme treten in der Zuchtung auf, wenn man von einem Zuchtstamm auf die fertige Sorte schlieBt, d. h. von Eigenschaften, die in fruhen Stadien des Zuchtungsgangs erkennbar werden, auf den spateren Zucht- erfolg. Das vorliegende Heft enthalt auch Arbeiten, die sich hiermit befassen.
