Hysterie gab es sicherlich schon langst, ehe das griechische Wort ge- bildet wurde, das in so merkwiirdiger Art die Krankheit mit dem weiblichen Geschlechtsorgan verkniipft. Nicht nur, weil der Uterus als der Sitz der Hysterie galt, muBte die Hysterie nun fast zwei Jahrtausende dunkel und unbestimmt bleiben; auch die physiologisch-pathologischen Kenntnisse wurden ja bekanntlich erst im 19. Jahrhundert so weit entwickelt, daB eine Grund- legung der Geistes- und Nervenkrankheiten durch sie moglich war. Aber auch die rein klinisch symptomatologische Forschung hat es bis fast in die Neuzeit hinein zu keiner nur halbwegs zureichenden und brauchbaren Be- stimmung der Hysterie gebracht. Nicht nur, daB die Herausarbeitung der {)rganischen und funktionellen Nervenkrankheiten ja ganz neuen Datums ist, und daB ohne diese mod erne Entwicklung eine praktische Definition der Hysterie im Einzelfalle uns heute ebenso unmoglich erscheint, wie etwa dem modernen Chirurgen die Chirurgie ohne die V oraussetzung der Asepsis. Auch innerhalb des Kreises dessen, was wir heute mehr weniger genau als "Neurosen" bezeichnen, war nicht nur eine Unterscheidung von der erst im 19. Jahrhundert abgegrenzten Neurasthenie unmoglich; gerade im Alter- tum wurde viel der Hysterie Zugehoriges der Epilepsie zugezahlt, und Gilles de la Tourette macht mit Recht die Bemerkung, daB die Epilepsie ihren heiligen Charakter (morbus sacer) zum groBen Teil sicherlich der Be- obachtung von Hysterischen verdankt. Gerade die groBen Zeugen der hyste- rischen Veranlagung im Mittelalter, die Besessenheit und die Wunder, sind erst viel spater in ihren Beziehungen zur Hysterie gewiirdigt worden 1).
