Ais Dr. J. Neumark im Sommer 1974 von einem ein und einhalbjahrigen Studienaufenthalt in den USA nach Wien zuriickkehrte, beauftragte ich ihn mit der Verbesserung und moglichsten Standardisierung der Anaesthesiemethoden in der Geburtshilfe in unserem Klinikum. Er hat sich seither dieser Aufgabe mit gro er Hingabe unterzogen und es ist zweifellos sein Verdienst, die kontinuierliche lumbale Epiduralanaesthesie als geburtshilfliche Schmerzausschaltungsme- thode in Osterreich eingeflihrt, propagiert und gelehrt zu haben. Mit zunehmender Vertiefung in die theoretischen und praktischen Aspekte dieser Methode wurde es Herm Neumarkjedoch immer deutlicher bewu t, d noch viele Fragen offen wa- ren und einer wissenschaftlichen Bearbeitung bedurften. Umfangreiches Literaturstudium er- gab zwar, d viele Teilaspekte (z. B. Technik, Pharmakologie, Kreislaufdynamik) bereits durchforscht worden waren - wobei z. T. sehr widerspriichliche Resultate zutage traten -, d es aber an einer kritischen Sichtung und zusammenfassenden Bewertung mangelte. Ich bestarkte daher Herm Kollegen Neumark vor etwa zwei Jahren in seiner Idee, diesem Mangel abzuhelfen und eine Monographie zu verfassen, die auch seine eigenen Erfahrungen und expe- rimentellen Erkenntnisse mit einbeziehen sollten. Was uns dabei vorschwebte, war eine Me- thode, die sich nicht nur in der Geburtshilfe, sondem auch aufvielen anderen Gebieten der operativen Medizin bewahrt hatte, kritisch zu durchleuchten, ihre Moglichkeiten und Grenzen darzulegen und dies einem gro eren Kollegenkreis zur Kenntnis zu bringen.
