Man könnte oft geneigt sein, wie dies in den letzten Jahren nicht selten versucht worden ist, Anlehnung an vergleichend physiologische Tatsachen zu suchen. Dies erscheint um so verständlicher, als ja in den letzten 11/ Jahr- 2 z hnten so Vorbildliches von R. Magnus, A de Kleyn und deren Schule g(;lleistet worden ist. Mir scheint aber, dass eine solche Anlehnung nur mit Vorbehalt und äusserster Vorsicht geschehen darf. Beim Menschen ist das Labyrinth nicht nur ein Reflexorgan, sondern auch ein Sinnesorgan im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, d. h. ein Rezeptions rgan für Sinnes-Empfindungen 1. Reflexe und Empfindungen sind nun beim Menschen zumeist ganz innig miteinander verknüpft, so dass eine Einwirkung beider aufeinander oft nicht nur nicht ausgeschlossen werden darf, sondern sogar wahrscheinlich ist. Gerade aber die "Empfindungen" werden uns bei den Tieren ein wohl immer ver- schlossenes, dunkles Gebiet bleiben. Ausserdem aber ist die Organisation des ganzen Zentralnervensystems beim Men chen speziell infolge der über- wiegenden Entwicklung des Grosshirnes eine von den Tieren so grund- verschiedene, dass es wohl kaum angeht, einfache Parallelschlüsse zuziehen. Es ist gewiss nicht anzunehmen, dass einzelne' Teile des Zentralnervensystems in der stammesgeschichtlichen Entwicklungsreihe in ihrer prinzipiellen Funktion völlig umgestellt worden sind. Sicherlich ist 'aber ihre Wertigkeit sehr stark verschieden und das will wohl viel bedeuten; darin liegt meines Erachtens gerade der Hauptunterschied.
